Colorado’s Department of Human Services must pay for an independent consultant to ensure people no longer languish in county jails for months while awaiting mental competency evaluations or treatment.
The mandate was announced Tuesday as part of a settlement between the state agency and Disability Law Colorado, a nonprofit that claimed the state fabricated data to cover up a months-long backlog for those evaluations.
